2009 Huron River Canoe Challenge
June 20th @ Gallup Park, Ann Arbor

Registration for all events is at the Gallup Park Wooden Picnic Shelter

The Huron River Challenge is a joint venture between the Michigan Canoe Racing Association and the Huron River Watershed Council designed to bring an exciting day of canoe racing to the Huron River in Ann Arbor.

Race Schedule:

C-1 Professional Race (10:00am) $10.00

The kickoff to the Huron River Canoe Challenge will feature 25 – 30 professional solo canoes in a 6 mile race around Geddes Pond. The race will begin at 10:00 am with a mass start in Gallup Park and feature 1 large lap between US23 and Furstenburg Nature Area. Registration begins at 9:00 am at the Wooden Picnic Shelter.

C-2 Professional Race (12:30 pm) Expert 1 $25.00/boat -- Expert 2 $15.00/boat

The highlight race of the Huron River Canoe Challenge will feature over 30 professional canoe racing competing in a “marathon style” event. The race will be around 15 miles long and include a portage at the Geddes Dam. Many of the racers competing in this event will also compete in the Au Sable River Canoe Marathon, a non-stop 120 mile race, in late July. The race will begin with a mass start in Gallup Park. Registration is at the Wooden Picnic Shelter.

Mentor Race (After C-2 Race) FREE/entrant
Sponsored by Michigan Canoe Racing Association and Huron River Watershed Council
The Mentor Race will commence upon the completion of the C-2 race. The race course will be a short circuit on Geddes Pond.

From North:
(also if coming from East or West along I-96)
I-75 South to US23 South. When near Ann Arbor follow signs for M-14 E/US23 South. Take exit #39 for Geddes Rd. Turn right on Geddes Rd. Continue west approximately 1.5 miles. The entrance to Gallup Park is on the left just past the Huron Parkway intersection. Continue through Gallup Park to the last parking lot. Registration is at the Wooden Picnic Shelter.

From South:
(also if coming from East or West along I-94)
US23 North to Exit #39, Geddes Rd. Turn left on Geddes Rd. Continue west approximately 1.5 miles. The entrance to Gallup Park is on the left just past the Huron Parkway intersection. Continue through Gallup Park to the last parking lot. Registration is at the Wooden Picnic Shelter.

***If the lot nearest the Picnic Shelter is full, please park in one of the other Gallup Park lots or at the Gallup Park boat launch.

Gallup Park
Gallup Park is one of the most popular recreation places in Ann Arbor. Bike paths run along almost the entire length of the race course. There are also playgrounds for the kids. Grills and picnic tables will be available for MCRA racers and families at the Wooden Picnic Shelter. The park is very popular, so the MCRA will receive a lot of exposure. Please try to make yourself available after the races to answer questions people might have about the MCRA and canoe racing in general. Lodging
The nearest campgrounds are located in Ypsilanti and Brighton. There are several hotels and motels in the Ann Arbor area if you wish to stay overnight.
