A note from Hank Feldhauser, asking for input on a C-1 race on the Au Sable. Please respond to him directly at the email below.
To all paddlers who ever wanted to race down the AuSable River in a C-1 boat. I think our sport is always changing. I think this is the next level of racing in this neighborhood. After talking with some of you I know that next Labor Day Weekend is the best time to hold this event. I paddled a homemade C-1 that is 23 feet long 18 inches wide and 9 inches tall. It is 38 pounds. It is the only boat I own. So I raced it with a single blade. I used a La Vass. It is 10 years old and patched up a few times but it got the job done in 17:44. And I hate paddling a C-1. I'm no good at it at all. There are many of you who always talk to me when we meet out on the river. So I know that most of you can do this race a lot faster than this old man can do it in. In fact, I'm counting on it. Some folk's even want an open class for use of a rudder. Men's class- women's class- oldest -youngest---I'm into getting as many boats out on that river as I can get. I picture something like this....... start off a few hour's earlier, 30 or 60 second interval start, regular cut off time's, 19 hour to finish, and there may not be much of anything for you to get at the finish except you can say "Ya, I did that!" If this work's out than maybe the next year thing's will be better, but for now it's little baby step's. So, how many of you would like to do a Force One Challenge? Any ideas on it?
