11/7/11 - 2012 MCRA Board of Directors - Rebecca Barton, Bob Bradford, Tom Cannon, Jason Hatfield, Rick Joy, Cheryl Lucey, Tim McClure, Pete Mead, Todd, VanDeVen, Dwight Walker, Lynne Witte.
Annual Board Planning Session is Sunday, December 4 at Bob and Janet Bradford's near Lapeer. Tentative start 10 a.m.

 

10/16/11 - MCRA ByLaws, Article IV, Section A. The officers shall be elected annually by an official ballot mailed to each member who has paid dues by August 1 of that year. The ballot will then be returned to a designated person before a designated deadline. The results will be announced at the fall meeting. All elected Board members must be legal Michigan residents and members of the Michigan Canoe Racing Association.

9/24/11 - Dear MCRA family,
It is with sadness I share the following news with you.
Matthew James Curley, of Oscoda, passed away on Thursday September 22, 2011 in Oscoda, age 24. Matthew was born on June 25, 1987 in Tawas City to Kevin J. and Kimberley L. (nee Thomas) Curley. He attended Oscoda Schools, and will be always remembered for his love and passion for sports and a wide variety of outdoor activities, most specifically wrestling, hunting, boating, motorcycles, camping, bowling, and snowmobiling. Matthew is now survived by his loving mother, Kimberley Curley of Oscoda; 2 sisters, Jill (Dave) Lutz of Ferndale, Michigan, and Stephanie Curley of Ladson, South Carolina; his maternal grandparents, Mabel and Dave Thomas of Oscoda; niece and nephew, Audriana Curley and Landon Lutz, several aunts, uncles, cousins, and many dear friends. Matthew is preceded in death by his father, Kevin James Curley in 2003, and his paternal grandparents, Delbert and Jeanne Curley. Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday September 27, 2011 at 1:00 PM at Trinity Lutheran in Oscoda. His family will welcome friends at Trinity Lutheran Church in Oscoda, MI from 10:00 AM until the time of the funeral service. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association. An on line guest registry is available at www.bureshfuneralhomes.com. Funeral arrangements are by the Buresh Funeral Home in Oscoda.

9/21/11 - Please submit your name to Lynne Witte ( lynnewitte@juno.com) by Friday, Sept. 23 if you are interested in being a part of the 2012 MCRA Board. The Board meets annual the first weekend (normally Sunday) of December and again at the Klondike in March. Other off season communication can be done through emails or phone conversations. You would be expected to be available at our races, if Board decisions/actions are needed. Thank you for considering to work to promote canoe racing in Michigan.

9/16/11 - MCRA Banquet - Please plan on joining the MCRA Family and celebrate the 2011 racing season at the end of the year Awards Banquet in Paradise on Saturday. The banquet is at the Community Center between Paradise and the finish line with dinner starting at 6:00, doors opening earlier for your convenience. Following dinner will be awards: top paddlers (special awards designed by Angela Rimer), most improved, recognition of rookie paddlers, recognition of 2011 race directors, and more. Fellowship at the Yukon Inn will follow awards, which should conclude no later then 8:30. Please plan on attending as it is important to celebrate the season's racing accomplishments and give recognition and thanks to the Paradise race organizers and volunteers as well as all the people who have worked very hard to make this season a success. Support the MCRA, come have fun, and we'll see you Saturday at the banquet!

9/20/10 - Just a Reminder. The top paddlers received sweatshirts at the awards banquet, but due to time constraints they weren't able to be personalized in time for the banquet. An announcement was made to this affect at the time they were presented, but only a few were returned by the end of the banquet. If you would like yours personalized please get it to Angela Rimer at your soonest opportunity. If you won't be able to get it to her in the near future please email her so she knows to expect it at a later date. 9/9/10 - All MCRA paddlers, race directors, and families are invited to a year ending celebration Yooper style. There is a light dinner being served 6:00 p.m. (come a bit later if you need time after the race) at the Paradise Community Center for $5.00 per person and kids eat free. Maps will be available at the race site. Following the Paradise race awards will be the MCRA annual awards to paddlers, directors, and bank runners. Everyone is invited to the Yukon Inn later Saturday evening for a kayak raffle and fun. Paradise crew has some Yooper surprises in store for all of us.

9/6/10 - The MCRA End of Year Get Together will be at Paradise following the canoe races Saturday, Sept. 11 at the Paradise Community Center. All current MCRA Race Directors and MCRA youth are invited to be our guests at no charge to you.. Nominal fee to the adults. Following a lite dinner, prepared by a cater from Paradise, you are invited to the Yukon Inn. Invite your paddling friends, families, and race sponsors.

7/28/10 - As you may know Bill Schmitz passed away yesterday morning. He had requested that he be cremated and have his ashes spread on his U.P. property. Please keep Bill and his loved ones in your thoughts and prayers.

7/8/10 - Some sad news. Rich Kent has passed away. His funeral is being handled by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral home in Traverse City, (305 6th Street). Visitation is from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. on Sunday. Funeral is at 11 a.m. on Monday at the Reform Church on Front Street . Our thoughts and prayers are with Patsy, Jason, Candy, and family.

6/18/10 - To maintain Michigan Canoe Racing Association high level of expertise and sportsmanship, the MCRA Board of Directors has added the following amendment to the MCRA Race Rules. This statement is effective immediately.


"Any paddler that does not complete the designated race course will receive automatic disqualification from the race. The infraction is reviewable by the Michigan Canoe Racing Association Board of Directors."

5/24/10 - The Michigan Canoe Racing Association raised $1046 towards the Shelterhouse of Midland. The money was raised with entry fees and fees for lunch after the race. The weather turned out to be fantastic and the racers came in numbers. The C-2 race had 44 boats participate and the C-1 had 35 boats participate. I want to thank all those that helped out and especially TIC of Midland for sponsoring this years event and also to my family for everything they did to help me put this race on. - Steve Bis.

1/11/10 - Mark your calendars! USCA Nationals Championships 2011 will be held on the Muskegeon River in Newaygo. Stay tuned there will be many exciting changes to the venue. In other news from the USCA meeting our own Dwight Walker was elected USCA Vice President. 

 

1/4/10 - Jerry Lamotte of Grayling, paddler and most often known for all the work with the AuSable Marathon. He is the Chief of the Paddler Check-In. Jerry will undergo surgery for cancer on January 6. They ask for your prayers and thoughts.

 

1/4/10 - The 2010 MCRA Race Schedule is now posted.

 

1/4/10 - A few updates from the fall MCRA Board of Directors meeting.
- MCRA Paddlers' Points for the 2010 racing season will be calculated using 100 to first place. Every paddler will have one race drop. This is for all MCRA sanctioned classes.

- All participants in 2010 MUST be paid MCRA members to receive points or awards. With the exception of the Spikes race both paddlers in the canoe must be current MCRA members. There will no longer be a one day(weekend) race MCRA fee. All paddlers will pay the year fee. So register early and avoid the $15 late fee.

- Paddlers in the Spikes race do not need to be MCRA paddlers to receive prizes and points.

- All MCRA racing canoes need to have obtained a number or specification from Tom Cannon.

The Klondike Canoe Race information is available on the Race Schedule page. There will also be a MCRA general meeting after the race and before the awards at the Au Sable Inn. (@3:00pm).
